PLAYING OUT LOUD!
NEWS
Music writer Oliver Gray, himself a Joiners regular, has been commissioned to
write the definitive history of the Joiners in Southampton - and he wants your
help!
Oliver would like help with the following topics - if you can help him please
email him at oliver@revilolang.com :
*Do you love the Joiners? Have you been a regular customer? Do you know people
who have attended legendary gigs there?
*Do you have a story to tell? Can you help us with any information?
*Exact dates and line-ups of any gigs at the Joiners over the last 40 years.
Most documentation has gone missing as landlords have come and gone, so
absolutely anything is useful to Oliver.
*He also need stories, preferably amusing ones of amazing gigs and encounters
with the stars.
*If you have played at the Joiners and have any good stories to tell, we want to
hear from you. If you are now an international megastar, don’t be shy!
*Above all, we need photos and other memorabilia. All info will be credited and
lovingly looked after.
As music lovers in the South will know, since opening as a music venue in 1968,
the Joiners in Southampton's St Mary Street has achieved legendary status in the
music world, having played host to such luminaries as Oasis, Radiohead,
Green Day, The Verve, Primal Scream, Suede, P J Harvey, The Manic Street
Preachers, Coldplay, The Libertines and Franz Ferdinand, to name but a few.
Richard Ashcroft cites the Joiners as the venue of his greatest ever
performance, the Manic Street Preachers signed their record deal there and Oasis
played there for £100. And every day of the week, it stays loyal to the grass
roots as it plays host to local and up-and-coming bands.
Don't miss our completely revised
Food & Things section. A list of 160 restaurants, pubs, wine bars, bistros,
hotels and cafes that we have eaten in and liked. Set out geographically, we
hope it will help you find a decent place to
eat. Please mention Playing Out Loud if you visit any of the establishments
listed!
One of our favourite bands, Pronghorn, are involved in an
Endorse It In Dorset event on Easter Sunday, April 16. But it’s not in Dorset,
it’s in Somerset, at the atmospheric Cheese & Grain venue in Frome. The
Dorset-based cowpunk
outfit are playing a one-day festival with the likes of The Beat and Toupe.
We’ll provide more details later but if you want to book an advance ticket the
number to ring is 01373 455420.
