AUGUST 2003


       Food, drink and blues are the attraction on Saturday August 16 when the 3rd Bentworth Blues Afternoon takes place at The Star Inn at Bentworth near Alton.
Tickets are £10 for a line-up which kicks off with Tim Hain & The Worx at 1.30pm, with Claude Bourbon and Rude Mood following on and Trafficker with guitar hero Tommy Allen topping the bill at 5.30pm. Then it’s a jam session for the rest of the evening. Bar food and BBQ will be available all day.
On Sunday the great drummer Sam Kelly, British Blues Connection Drummer of the Year for five consecutive years, runs a Drum Workshop from 5.30 to 7pm.

       More blues news - Winchester’s Tower Arts Centre will be featuring The Black Cat Blues Club once a month during their autumn season. Tuesday is the day beginning with Memo Gonzales & The Bluescasters on September 30. October 21 showcases Sonny Black & The Dukes, with The Bruce Katz Band from Boston USA on November 18.        There’s a chance to have a curry and enjoy some multicultural music in Southampton next month. The Maple Leaff Club in The Polygon hosts the third Pukaar Curry Party from 8pm to midnight on Thursday September 25. Pukaar are a Bhangra band formed by Romail Gulzar with up to ten musicians of mixed nationalities producing some really compelling music. Also on the bill is Felicity with some rock and soul and guest artist Neil Maddock. Tickets are £10, students £8, to include admission and food.        Their website may say “Closed during August” but Talking Heads music venue in Portswood Road, Southampton, will be open at weekends during the month. The unique atmosphere of “the Heads,” which has become a popular gathering place for musicians and music lovers, can be appreciated on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.        Over on the Isle of Wight a charity event on Sunday August 10 offers six hours of free jazz in the open air at Ventnor Park Bandstand. Jazz In The Park sees three bands strutting their stuff in aid of The Earl Mountbatten Hospice from 12 noon onwards.
The non-stop music fest features The Sandown-Shanklin Brass Band, Tim Saul's Modern Jazz Sextet and The Goose Island Syncopators. Jazz In The Park will be complemented by gift stalls, food, and real ale from Ventnor Brewery to make it a real family day out.

       Fans of Dennis Locorriere will be delighted to hear that Dennis is touring solo again during October and November with a number of dates across the South.  
The man who gave Dr Hook their distinctive sound with his golden voice is at his best as a one-man show; his guitar-playing at his concert at Eastleigh’s Point venue as part of Eastleigh Summer Festival was revelatory.  The full list of Dennis dates is as follows:

Eastleigh Summer Music Festival is set to be a roaring success. Festival
Organiser Peter Chegwyn reports excellent sales for all the shows in the Big Top in Leigh Road Recreation Ground, the two concerts at The Point Arts Centre and the appearance of Jools Holland’s Rhythm & Blues Orchestra in Manor Farm Country Park.
The week kicks off with an audience with the great Dennis Locorriere now
forging a successful solo career. Formerly the front man with Dr Hook, Dennis is playing an acoustic one-man show at The Point to open the week’s attractions on Monday July 29. Over in the Big Top the next day Bob Geldof will be supported by Jamie Moses, guitarist with Loc Pacaminos. Wednesday features The Drifters & Real Abba Gold, Thursday presents The Levellers & Berroguetto, Friday it’s The SAS Band with Paul Young, Leo Sayer, Graham Gouldman of 10cc and many other star names.
The weekend sees The Saw Doctors & Jackie Leven playing on Saturday and everyone’s favourite Rolf Harris bringing his Rock & Rolf Show to the park on Sunday. Meanwhile, Jools and co with guest Sam Brown play over at Manor Farm Country Park on Thursday and Show of Hands headline a night of folk music at The Point on Wednesday.
Afternoon concerts include South American pan pipe sounds from Kausary, Berroguetto from Spain, high energy African bands Zambula and Zuba, plus local rock bands Sounder and Uncle Herb. The free entertainment culminates with jazz and world music on a Sunday Funday on August 3 featuring The New Gateway Jazz Band, Indian drummers The Dhol Blasters and much more. There will also be plenty of free entertainment for kids throughout the festival, plus a Craft Fayre, Food Fayre and licensed bar. Tickets are available via The Point (02380

       Budding musicians and singers are invited to take part in a talent show at the YMCA’s Southampton HQ in Cranbury Place on Wednesday September 24. The YMCA are having an open day to celebrate their 125-year presence in the city and everyone is invited. There will be prizes for the winners of the talent show and lots of other things going on, including stalls and refreshments, the chance to meet star guests, visual displays of the history of Southampton YMCA and
many more attractions to be announced later.
