PLAYING OUT LOUD!
NEWS
There is a great new opportunity for local musicians to get
radio airplay across the South of England. South Live is a new BBC radio
programme broadcasting from 7pm to 9pm every Sunday which showcases local
musicians from Hampshire, Dorset, Surrey and Sussex.
Two local artists are featured every week, who each play live in the studio. The
playlist is made up of music from local artists and there is a weekly demo panel
in which a group of judges with wide industry experience assess tracks that have
been sent in to the show. The winner is then featured on the show the following
week.
The programme also features interviews with established artists like Nitin
Sawhney,
Carleen Anderson and Arthur Brown as well as other music features.
Chris Bennett of BBC South is the man to speak to on 01273 320429. He says that:
*If you are a musician, we invite you to send us a demo.
*If you are an organisation concerned with helping musicians in the South, we
invite you to send a link and a brief summary so that we can link to you.
*If you are a promoter - let us know about your gigs.
You can get an idea of the show by looking at the associated mini-site at:

The following story is not a wind-up, we can promise you.
Following on from our inclusive interview with Fee Waybill in Playing Out Loud
last month, we have been notified by the public relations company handling The
Tubes UK tour in December that singer Fee Waybill is currently in hospital, but
should be OK for the tour. On November 8th during a live concert appearance at
the Canyon Club in Agoura Hills, California, Fee was bitten by several "Mouse
Ear" bats. Waybill, who co-founded the pioneering shock-rockers from San
Francisco, has spent the past week in Cedar Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles
undergoing injections for rabies and a series of blood tests.
From his hospital bed in LA he says: "This is the last time we play Agoura
Hills! Had we known that the area was awash with bats, we would have thought
twice about playing the venue. The bat situation in California is getting out of
hand. This is the first time any kind of animal has attacked me during a
performance. The Tubes may be perceived to be an outrageous rock'n'roll band,
but this is too extreme!"
For the past week,Feel has been slowly recovering and will soon be placed on a
rigorous health and fitness regime. Personal trainer Larry Gillespie says,
"Fee's a trooper. Bat bites can drain the energy from your central nervous
system, but Fee is making a speedy recovery and should be up to speed for the
Tubes' forthcoming "Wild West Show" UK concerts in December. Full details of the
tour follow below.

Brook venue in Southampton since it reopened in October, and the general

some of the names booked for early next year - Carleen Anderson, Aynsley Lister,
Nazareth, Glenn Tilbrook, Bachman Turner Overdrive, The Zombies.....and more!

Our good friend Gordon Haskell, currently on tour in Europe,
will be back in Hampshire for a gig on Christmas Eve. He is playing a gig at the
Talking Heads, Portswood Road, Southampton so stick the 24th in your diary. And
don’t forget to buy Gordon’s latest album “The Lady Wants To Know” if you
haven’t already got it. It’s a great selection of the songs of Michael Franks.
By the way, Gordon says it’s free entry to the Talking Heads gig if you wear a
gorilla costume or a chicken suit. See you there!
Another good friend of Playing Out Loud, American singer Dennis
Locorriere - “the voice of Dr Hook” - has just announced his UK tour dates for
next year.
He kicks off the tour with a date at the Tivoli Theatre in Wimborne, Dorset, on
Saturday March 19. We’ll be putting the full itinerary on the website soon.
American alt-country band Kevin Montgomery & The Road Trippers

TUBES TO PLAY SOUTHSEA! Cult American band The Tubes have added
a Hampshire date to their December tour - Fee Waybill and his outrageous crew
are playing South Parade Pier at Southsea on Tuesday December 14. See separate
item below for full tour itinerary.
The
Tubes, the outrageous San Francisco-based theatrical rock band, best known for
their outlandish, no-holds-barred rock concerts and the satirical American
parody anthems 'White Punks On Dope', 'Mondo Bondage' and 'What Do You Want From
Life', have just announced the December 2004 UK Tour Dates for their forthcoming
concerts - 'The Tubes Wild West Tour'.
The tour will include the original members of the Tubes - Fee Waybill (lead
vocals), Prairie Prince (drums), Roger Steen (guitar), and Rick Anderson (bass),
plus new members Gary Cambra (keyboards) and David Medd (synths). The tour is a
warm-up to the band's forthcoming studio album which will be released in 2005.
Lead vocalist and front man, Fee Waybill says, "The Wild West concept of the
show is full of unexpected surprises and fun, and UK audiences will be in for a
treat. "The show kicks off with an overture of Spaghetti western movie themes
hosted by MC Wild Bill Fee," adds Waybill. "Other onstage personas will include
a Mexican bandito/Mariachi singer, a Mad Cow Auctioneer/Chainsaw Butcher, and a
Snake Oil Salesman called Diamond Dick." Waybill is also planning to bring back
his popular stage personas, Mondo Bondage Gimp, and the infamous drug induced
British rock star Quay Lewd.
As the quintessential satirists of American culture, the Tubes were the first to
combine theatrical rock extravaganzas with great musicianship. Despite being
repeatedly banned for their uncensored live concerts, during November 1977 the
Tubes sold out six nights at the Odeon Hammersmith, and recorded the live album
'What Do You Want From Live', which was subsequently released the following
year.
Unfortunately The Tubes will not be coming anywhere near the South Coast but
fans can travel to the following venues:

Fans of The Handsome Family will be glad to hear that the
American husband and wife duo will be back in the UK towards the end of the
year. Brett and Rennie will be bringing their uniquely sinister brand of alt
country to The Big Session with The Oyster Band when they play support on their
tour. As well as gigs in London and Brighton there are concerts at The Anvil in
Basingtoke on Wednesday December 1 and Salisbury City Hall on Thursday December
9.
