PLAYING OUT LOUD!
NEWS
Baby Charles – Soul Cellar – Saturday
28th February
Any band with the sheer nerve to not only cover Arctic Monkeys modern classic “I
Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor” but totally reinvent it into a 1960s soul
stomp and make it sound like it their own must have something special about
them. And that’s exactly what Brighton’s Baby Charles have done.
Fronted by soul sensation Dionne Charles, this wonderful 9 piece band lay down
some refreshingly spunky and vibrant soulful tunes with more than a sprinkling
of funk. With backing from some of the highest ranking funk DJs around, the band
were invited by none other than Radio 2’s Mark Lamarr to record six live tracks
in session for his God’s Jukebox show. Suitably impressed, Lamarr has not only
given Baby Charles astounding version of “….Dancefloor” radio play but he has
written the sleeve notes to the bands debut album which was released on Italian
label Record Kicks last year.
Baby Charles have a lot more in their repertoire. The timeless soul of “Hard Man
To Please” would not be out of place on any Aretha Franklin album whilst the
laid back funk of “The Sphinx” is an ideal soundtrack to many post-night-out
chill outs. The band are clearly highly skilled and passionate musicians whilst
Dionne Charles has the voice that suggests she is a huge star in the making.
The upcoming gig at Soul Cellar on Saturday 28th February is one not to be
missed. Tickets are available from the Soul Cellar Box Office (c/o Live Nation)
on 023 8063 2601. You can also visit the Soul Cellar website at
www.soulcellar.com . Tickets are priced
at £8 each.
We were sad to hear of the death of Alan Briars last December
2007.
Alan was co-founder of the Trowbridge Village Pump Festival and was also a
musician himself. The Arc Theatre in Trowbridge is staging A Tribute In Music To
Alan Briars on Saturday February 23. The lineup includes Alan’s former band
Stove Gallows, Mike Silver, Johnny Coppin, Keith Christmas and Fred Wedlock.
Please support the evening which is raising money for the Dorothy House Hospice.
Tickets are £10 through 0845 299 0476.
Mint Burston, who died on November 17, 2007, was almost single-handedly
responsible for turning the Joiners Arms from a back-street Southampton pub into
one of the most important venues on the UK gig circuit, vital in the early
careers of Radiohead, Oasis, Muse, Coldplay and almost any important band of the
last thirty years. Mint's unerring instincts, his tolerant approach, his
unselfishness and his promoting skills are remembered and appreciated by all who
have visited or played at the Joiners. Please use the Myspace tribute page to
share your memories and appreciation of this unassuming but truly great man:
