SETH LAKEMAN – The Brook, Southampton –
Sunday 18th January
The
rise and rise of dynamic folk singer Seth Lakeman is one of the most refreshing
stories from the world of music in the last few years. Since his shock Mercury
Music Award nomination in 2005 for his album “Kitty Jay”, his music and
popularity have gone from strength to strength and a sold out Brook audience
added weight to that with their enthusiasm.
Opening with an epic version of “The Storm”, it was hard to take your eyes off
of Lakeman. Backed up by a three-piece band including his brother Sean,
Lakeman’s rampant violin playing and passionate voice made for fantastic
entertainment. Songs like “Lady Of The Sea”, “King & Country” and “The White
Hare” were met with rapturous applause whilst “Solomon Browne”, from Lakemans’
most recent album “Poor Man’s Heaven”, was unarguably one of the show’s
highlights.
Lyrically, it is possibly difficult to relate Lakeman as his songs are all about
the stories and legends of Dartmoor which is where he grew up and now lives.
However his genuine appreciation for his audience shone through and his raw
passion for what he does gave the whole night a feeling of real togetherness and
joy.
You can’t help but feel that this is only the beginning for Seth Lakeman. He is
still only 31 and, on the evidence of the development of his work and the fire
and skill demonstrated in his live shows, he is in danger of making folk music
cool again. Imagine that…. Review

Outlaws by Le Reno Amps
A hypnotic bass line that would do Johnny Cash proud underpins this piece of
mock psychobilly from Glasgow’s Le Reno Amps. It’s a dark daft love story which
has a lot in common with the kind of sleazy, whisky-swilling rock so much in
evidence on the first Kings Of Leon album. The other two tracks offered up here
are equally silly but more upbeat and hint at some level of versatility yet to
be fully witnessed fom the Scottish Arts Council‘s great white hopes
