MAY 2004

DURAN DURAN
At the recent Brit Awards 2004, 80s band Duran Duran picked up an award for “Services To Music.” What was that all about? This collection of musically limited fashion models who originally appeared in the guise of New Romantics may have sold a lot of records, but “services to music,” I don’t think so. OK they had over a dozen top ten hits and some of the early ones like “Girls On Film,” “Rio” and “Is There Something I Should Know” were pretty good songs.
Only problem with Duran Duran as far as I am concerned was Simon Le Bon, over-weight, overprivileged and overrated with a voice like a rottweiler gripped tightly by the scrotum. While the rest of the band were reasonably competent musicians and like Le Bon highly photogenic in their now out-dated clobber, the Le Bon voice was a nasal, whining irritation. It seems unbelievable that Bond theme “A View To A Kill” sporting the quintessential Le Bon whine was the most high-selling Bond theme ever in the UK and the USA.
Equally unbelievable is the fact that Duran Duran are on tour next month
and tickets are actually selling! Surely the people who were fooled by the pop idol image of the band have grown up by now and realised the error of their ways. Who on earth would want to listen to the superfluous music of Duran Duran at extorted prices all over again. Good God, Charles and Di were fans, doesn’t that say anything.
Anyway, it feels much better to have got that off my chest. It’s only the
opinion of one individual who has a few musical skeletons in his own closet, but it is sincerely believed and stated. Anyone out there who would like to tell the world just what makes Duran Duran so successful and how wrong I am can submit their opinion to our messages column where all responses will be printed in full without editing or censorship.
Just go to our Message Board now, click and release your opinions...
