JUNE 2003

Broadcaster Sally ‘Traffic’ Boazman arrived late for Bluesathon 2003 held in Lymington, Hampshire, last Saturday. Denying any suggestion that she had been caught up in a traffic jam, Sally claimed that she had got lost on the way. Meanwhile Bob Pearce and his trio moved into Sally’s slot (no innuendo intended). When Sally arrived about an hour late she produced some smooth jazzy bluesy vocals with the help of pianists Matt Platt and her son Harry and got an excellent response from the crowd who soon warmed to her friendly personality. Hope she got home alright.

Southampton Jazz Club have a significant input into Southampton Arts Festival being staged in St Marys Church in Southampton over the weekend of June 27-29.  Committed and active members of Southampton Arts Council who are organising the festival, SJC are involved with three jazz concerts.  Chairman Andy Iles has organised a Saturday performance by Highfield Jazz Quintet featuring saxophonists Dave Blachford and Tony Blackburn and bassist  Mary Toms.  Another
highlight is the Sunday afternoon bash with Southampton Youth Jazz Orchestra.
Musical Director Daniel Mar-Molinero is in charge of the young musicians who have played in Cuba and the USA in recent years.
Sunday evening’s session allows Southampton pianist Ray D’Inverno to demonstrate his skills, leading and playing in one of his exciting and original conceptions.
All the concerts, which also include classical and popular performances,
are free.  For more details on the jazz gigs ring 077515 39429.

Former Zombies Colin Blunstone and Rod Argent revisit the Waterside Theatre at Holbury in the New Forest on Friday June 6, the scene of their sell-out triumph last September. That concert, arranged by Hythe fan Linda Charles, was a memorable high-quality affair, and the June date promises to be even better.
The Holbury gig is one of only six UK dates to feature a string quartet - a huge success recently when Colin and Rod played Salisbury City Hall. The inclusion of a quartet of superb classical musicians enables Colin to perform original arrangements of “Say You Don’t Mind,” “Misty Roses” and “I Don’t Believe in Miracles” exactly as they were recorded back in the 1970s. A spine-tingling experience, as anyone who was at Salisbury will confirm.
Naturally, all the Zombies hits like “She’s Not There” and “Time Of The
Season” will get an airing, plus some Argent favourites, notably “Hold Your Head Up” and “God Gave Rock & Roll To You.” Add some new material written by Rod and sung by Colin in his immaculate, breathtaking style plus the backing of a stellar band and you really have a night to remember. Tickets are £15 via 02380 207900.
