JUNE
2004
The Barrelhouse Blues Orchestra led by Dorset-based Paul Hart have just released
a new version of “Jumpin’Jack Flash” on the 36th anniversary of the original
Rolling Stones single. It’s a commemorative CD acknowledging the talent of
footballer Jack Rowley who played for Bournemouth, Manchester Utd and England,
who died in 1998. The single is just bubbling under the Top 40 and with your
help can make the charts. It’s at all good record shops, so go out and buy it!
“Jumpin’ Jack Flash” gets the full big band treatment recorded live with Johnny
Mars on vocals and a host ot top musicians including former Rolling Stone Mick
Taylor. Track 2 “All Downhill & No Brakes” is an excellent instrumental which
just roars along.

Winchester music writer and promoter Oliver Gray has collaborated with Eddie
Hardin, who replaced Stevie Winwood in The Spencer Davis Group to produce
Eddie’s autobiography. It’s called “Alab” (ain’t life a bastard), subtitled
Thirty six years of musical mayhem. The book chronicles Eddie’s life in the
music business in the 60s & 70s, his battle with the booze and his hellraising
adventures. A review will follow on the Reviews section of this website in due
course, but having read Oliver’s previous two highly readable and humorous books
I know what to expect. If you can’t wait for that, the book is published by
Sarsen Press of Winchester at £9.99 and you can order it through Oliver’s
website www.olivergray.com

Look
out for a young lady called Melissa who has suddenly appeared on the Southampton
music scene. She appears at the Victory pub down by Southampton Railway Station
on Friday June 25th. A listen to her demo CD reveals a singer-songwriter with a
sultry voice and an original style; the photograph next to this item was sent to
me by Melissa and was titled pubcrawl.jpeg - I don’t know what this tells us!

The Larmer Tree Festival, which takes place on 14th–18th July at the Larmer Tree
Gardens on the Wilts/Dorset border, is appealing for more volunteers to help
with the smooth running of this fantastic event.
The Larmer Tree Festival is now in its 15th year so has a large bank of
experienced regular volunteers but there is a need for extra help.
In return for a few hours each day you could receive a free ticket to the
Festival. This gives you the chance to see eclectic music from around the
world, take part in a workshop or simply relax and chill out in the unique
atmosphere of the Larmer Tree Festival.
Volunteers are still needed to join the Breakdown Crew, which involves
deconstructing the Festival. Litter Pickers are needed during the Festival to
help clean this beautiful venue and maintain our recycling programme. If either
role appeals the Larmer Tree would love to hear from you.
So, if you are over 18 and interested in making new friends and becoming an
essential part of the Larmer Tree team, please call Becca Small on 01725 552300.
You can find out more about the Festival on www.larmertree.co.uk

May Bank Holiday sees
a special “Dirty Side Skanz” all-dayer at Sobar
nestling in Bevois Valley, Southampton. Squeeze 18 and Gravity Productions have
arranged a music event starting at 12 noon featuring DJs and upcoming
Southampton band, The Pickpockets. Entry is £2 until 6pm and £4 thereafter.
Tipped by those in the know as “the next big thing” The Pickpockets are a
sensational hip-hop outfit including Stevie Keith in their number. They do good
food there was well, apparently. (Photograph by Andy Sutton)

SPYDAFEST 2004 is a brand new festival taking place in Portland, Dorset, this
summer.
SPYDAFEST 2004 - PORTLAND, DORSET - JUNE 25 - 27
A new high quality music and community arts festival comes to Southwell Business
Park (www.southwellbusinesspark.com ) Isle of Portland, Dorset this summer.
Promoted by leading internet radio station SpydaRadio (www.spydaradio.co.uk ) in
association with London’s celebrated Borderline Club ( www.borderline.co.uk) now
a Mean Fiddler Group venue and music agency and Mutiny Music (www.mutinymusic.co.uk).
This small, high profile event will showcase the eclectic music presented by
Spyda Radio and this beautiful but economically struggling part of the Dorset
Coast, recently designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lists of artists taking
part will appear in our Festival Focus section in due course.
Media profile for this event will be strong. The Big Issue is on board as the
festival’s charitable benefactor. There are also very strong links with BBC
Radio 2, and it is likely that certain shows will feature the artists programmed
and the festival itself. BBC Radio 2 is now the nation’s most popular station
with 18 million listener’s each day. There will be a series of advertisements
released in the national press and music media in February/March ; MOJO, Uncut,
FRoots, Guardian Guide and the Telegraph have all been shortlisted. Weymouth &
Portland Borough Council are also firmly behind the event and will feature
SpydaFest prominently in all of their seasonal publicity for the resort.
The site itself is an exposed outdoor Greenfield site overlooking the Jurassic
coast and the famous Portland Bill and its lighthouse. There will be one main
outdoor stage and a smaller 2nd venue in a marquee. The planned capacity for the
festival will be 2000 customers for this first year. Both stages have an ongoing
programme from Midday until late evening on the Saturday and Sunday. There may
also do a "warm up" event on the Friday night for local residents and weekend
ticket holders. Talks are taking place with a number of funders and community
groups about securing finance for a programme of workshops and performances for
local residents, both adults and children alike. In addition there will be a
host of concession stalls offering a selection of foods and refreshments from
around the world, craft products and of course a licensed bar. Portland
residents will also get a heavily discounted ticket price, to make the weekend
more accessible to them and encourage them to join in.
Brewing giant Carling are committed to sponsor SpydaFest 2004. This major player
in the licensed products trade has been heavily involved in the UK live music
scene for many years now, sponsoring festivals, concerts and an entire chain of
venues throughout the country. The publicity that their presence will bring is
huge, reflecting the vast numbers of visitors to their live event website (www.carlinglive.com)
More details are available from any of the websites listed above. (©Peter Ashton 2004)
