PLAYING OUT LOUD!
NEWS
Eastleigh’s guitar guru, Lou Stonehill will be entertaining his many followers
at The Point Theatre, Eastleigh on March 25 as part of the 2006 Mayor of
Eastleigh’s Charity Appeal.
Eastleigh born and bred, Lou is an internationally acclaimed acoustic guitarist
and has been described as one of the finest guitarists of his generation, and is
Takamine guitars’ official demonstrator. Lou counts among his mentors such
acclaimed performers as the late Eric Roche, Tommy Emmanuel and John Jorgenson.
Organiser of the event Kim Garner Says “I was aware of Lou’s international
status as an acoustic performer. There has been a recent resurgence in
popularity of this type of music which appeals to so many, and along with his
local connection, it made him the ideal choice for one of our three charity
events at The Point this year. I was thrilled when he agreed to perform and
equally delighted when local acoustic trio Midway also agreed to appear.”
Lou has a wealth of experience and contacts in his field and approached Tom
Dale, a renowned blues artist from Cornwall who will be making the trip up to
enhance the line up and help raise funds for the three local charities adopted
by the Mayor, Councillor Bernie Wright. These are Homestart Eastleigh, The
Hamble Life Boat and The Hamble Sea Scouts. It will be an evening of some of the
finest acoustic performances to be found anywhere on the South Coast, with the
added bonus of Leicester based Neil Segrott engineering the sound. For those in
the know, Neil is Tommy Emmanuel’s sound engineer, regarded by many as the best
sound man in the UK.
Tickets £8.50 and £6.50 concessions available from The Point, Eastleigh.

Music writer Oliver Gray, himself a Joiners regular, has been commissioned to
write the definitive history of the Joiners in Southampton - and he wants your
help!
Oliver would like help with the following topics - if you can help him please
email him at oliver@revilolang.com :
*Do you love the Joiners? Have you been a regular customer? Do you know people
who have attended legendary gigs there?
*Do you have a story to tell? Can you help us with any information?
*Exact dates and line-ups of any gigs at the Joiners over the last 40 years.
Most documentation has gone missing as landlords have come and gone, so
absolutely anything is useful to Oliver.
*He also need stories, preferably amusing ones of amazing gigs and encounters
with the stars.
*If you have played at the Joiners and have any good stories to tell, we want to
hear from you. If you are now an international megastar, don’t be shy!
*Above all, we need photos and other memorabilia. All info will be credited and
lovingly looked after.
As music lovers in the South will know, since opening as a music venue in 1968,
the Joiners in Southampton's St Mary Street has achieved legendary status in the
music world, having played host to such luminaries as Oasis, Radiohead,
Green Day, The Verve, Primal Scream, Suede, P J Harvey, The Manic Street
Preachers, Coldplay, The Libertines and Franz Ferdinand, to name but a few.
Richard Ashcroft cites the Joiners as the venue of his greatest ever
performance, the Manic Street Preachers signed their record deal there and Oasis
played there for £100. And every day of the week, it stays loyal to the grass
roots as it plays host to local and up-and-coming bands.
Don't miss our review of Dorset troubador Gordon Haskell's fantastic
autobiography "The Road To Harry's Bar - Forty Years on the Potholed Path to
Stardom." It's a great read, full of humour and a telling insight into the music
business. You can buy it at any good bookstore.
Don't miss our completely revised
Food & Things section. A list of 160 restaurants, pubs, wine bars, bistros,
hotels and cafes that we have eaten in and liked. Set out geographically, we
hope it will help you find a decent place to
eat. Please mention Playing Out Loud if you visit any of the establishments
listed!
There
are two new music venues to tell you about. Firstly The Old Barn, a restored
barn at Gore Road, New Milton, is putting on live music including original bands
and tribute acts every Friday night. Acts coming up in February include Lady Winwood’s Maggot, Midnight Lace and a Meatloaf/Blues Brothers tribute. See our
February listings for full details. They also do good food and provide
accommodation.
The other new music venue is at The Centre Stage, 14 Queens Road, Bournemouth,
where Paul Hills of Bluehill Music will be presenting live music every Thursday
night. The accent is on blues, jazz and rock and amongst the acts appearing in
February are The Barrelhouse Blues Band, Carvin Jones from the USA, Larry Miller
and Swing Unlimited. Again see our February listings for full details.
One of our favourite bands, Pronghorn, are involved in an
Endorse It In Dorset event on Easter Sunday, April 16. But it’s not in Dorset,
it’s in Somerset, at the atmospheric Cheese & Grain venue in Frome. The
Dorset-based cowpunk
outfit are playing a one-day festival with the likes of The Beat and Toupe.
We’ll provide more details later but if you want to book an advance ticket the
number to ring is 01373 455420.
