GLENN TILBROOK – The Brook – Tuesday
5th May
It
seems a month rarely goes by without Glenn Tilbrook being on the road. Be it
with the latest incarnation of Squeeze, his band The Fluffers or, as is the case
tonight, on his own armed solely with an acoustic guitar, it seems Tilbrook
simply does not tire of entertaining his audience in his own passionate and
energetic way.
Touring to promote what Tilbrook describes as his best album
ever – “Pandemonium Ensues” with The Fluffers – he takes to the stage with all
the bounce and energy that puts most fellow 51 year olds to shame. When on these
solo jaunts, Tilbrook tends to do away with a setlist and plays whatever he
fancies in between the occasional bow to audience requests and tonight is no
exception.
New songs “Still” and “Melancholy Emotion” show that TIlbrook has not lost his
ear for a punchy melody and the new songs played tonight more than stand up next
to established crowd favourites like “Tempted” and “Is That Love?” Slightly
obscurer Squeeze gems like “Someone Else’s Bell” and “Piccadilly” – both from
their classic 1981 album, “East Side Story” – also have a rare outing and remind
us of what a national treasure the band are.
Tilbrook also shows that he is a music fan first and foremost.
Raucous renditions of “Can’t Buy Me Love” and “You Can’t Do That” from The
Beatles’ “A Hard Days Night” LP see him performing with sheer glee and
enjoyment. A virtuoso version of Fleetwood Mac’s “Oh Well” goes down a storm too
and proves that, when it comes to the music press’s semi regular “Top 100 Guitar
Players” lists, it is puzzling as to how Tilbrook is criminally overlooked.
The night ends with arguably Squeeze’s finest moment, “Up The Junction” and
Tilbrook’s loyal fanbase go home happy. Tilbrook is planning to sit down with
Chris Difford and write a new Squeeze album next year. On the evidence of the
new songs played tonight and the energy and skill with which the set was played,
it should be worth the wait.

BY MARTIN SIRL
Easystreet by Dun The Veil
Delightful piece of country & western from an Anglo/Irish outfit who sound like
they could easily have been raised in the Appalachians. Country is not a genre
that is to everyone’s taste, but this shows how good it can be when done
properly. Carefree, easy on the ear and performed with gusto by a band who
obviously have a real feel for this kind of stuff. So grab a pitcher of cider,
hitch up your skirt and.. enjoy.
One More Shot (Of You Boy) by State Of Undress
Familiar to local folk fans, Dorset folk rockers State of Undress have taken the
bold step of enlisting Billy Bragg’s resident producer, Grant Showbiz, to do the
honours here and his expert touch does instil a certain earthy charm into what
is essentially a fairly pretty run-of-the-mill track. State Of Undress’ efforts
are also worth a listen but sadly even the Bragg connection fails to lift this
one above plain old average.
Grey’s The New Blonde by Henry Preistman
Anyone who remembers the Liverpool art/punk scene of the late seventies might
just have heard Henry Preistman’s name before and it’s nice to see the guy has
finally got around to releasing a solo album. This single offering from it is a
lush, stringy ballad which offers the simple message that getting old is not
that bad after all because someone might just still love you. Lines like ‘When I
first met you petrol was cheap, and so was the company I chose to keep’ show
that Priestman has retained the humour and lyrical cleverness that fans of his
previous bands, The Yachts, It’s Immaterial and The Christians will remember
with fondness
