Welcome to
PLAYING OUT LOUD!
Welcome to the November 2004 edition of Playing Out Loud,
POL for short. More comprehensive than ever with in-depth articles and interviews. As regular
visitors will know, and there are thousands of them now making
90,000+ hits per
month, our mission is to stimulate interest in live music and let you know
what’s on and where in Hampshire, Dorset and Wiltshire and parts of adjoining
counties. Jazz, pop, blues, folk, country, rock, soul and classical music are
all covered - if it’s live it’s here. But POL is not just a gigs listing site. Our Message Board has proved a popular innovation and can be used to recruit band members or announce last-minute gigs.
And it’s completely free. We will continue to review gigs, CDs, books and restaurants and provide you with the latest news. We also offer our services, for a small fee, to bands and performers
looking to improve their press, media or web content, and help them get more
gigs.
With over twenty years media experience, I personally know what is required to
get media coverage and how to present it, so
email me for more details. If you
like the look of this website my website manager can also help you set up your
own website or improve your existing one. Again, just
email for more
information.
POL November Editorial.
We enter this
month feeling just a bit pleased with ourselves - we’ve been shortlisted in the
Best Special Interest Website category in the
Hantsweb
Awards 2004. Last year we
came second, and this year we will be in the top two whatever happens at the
awards ceremony on November 9. Thanks to all you music lovers out there who
nominated us, and keep everything crossed for us. On the gigs front, this is
going to be a great month, particularly in
Southampton. The Brook venue has
reopened and is now bigger and better than ever.
With a 600 capacity, new bars, new toilets, more seating and many other
improvements, it’s also got a great line-up for November. Amongst the
attractions are the Tony Hadley Band, The Manfreds, Go West, Spaceritual.net,
Beverley Craven, Los Pacaminos and Walter Trout, so get down there and enjoy
some good live music.
Southampton Guildhall is also staging some great shows this month including
Rufus Wainwright, Perfect Alibi, young jazz upstart Amy Winehouse, Motorhead,
Ben Folds,
Beverley Knight and Whitesnake.
We take a look at Beverley Craven and Motorhead in our Articles section, along
with the return of Gilbert O’Sullivan to the live scene with a concert at Mr
Kyps in Poole on November 30, a national tour by former Bros star, Matt Goss, an
appearance of Canadian roots band The Bills at Talking Heads in
Southampton,
plus an exclusive interview with Fee Waybill, lead singer with The Tubes who
will be touring the UK in December.
Elsewhere there’s some great stuff at The Anvil in
Basingstoke including Paul
Carrack and Jools Holland’s Rhythm & Blues Orchestra, the entertaining Jive Aces
are coming to the Concorde Club in
Eastleigh. Folk trio Last Night’s Fun, always
hugely enjoyable, play a couple of Hampshire gigs, while some stellar acts pop
up at Portsmouth Guildhall including Jackson Browne, Status Quo and Lulu. World
music fans can see South African ensemble Ladysmith Black Mambazo at
Salisbury
City Hall on the 7th.
