PLAYING OUT LOUD! Our good friend Gordon Haskell, currently on tour in Europe, will be back in Hampshire for a gig on Christmas Eve. He is playing a gig at the Talking Heads, Portswood Road, Southampton so stick the 24th in your diary. And don’t forget to buy Gordon’s latest album “The Lady Wants To Know” if you haven’t already got it. It’s a great selection of the songs of Michael Franks. By the way, Gordon says it’s free entry to the Talking Heads gig if you wear a gorilla costume or a chicken suit. See you there! Another good friend of Playing Out Loud, American singer Dennis

Mon December 13: The Acorn Theatre Tues December 14: Southsea Parade Pier Playing Out Loud has just been grabbed the Runner Up award in
the Best Special Interest Website section in this year's Hantsweb Awards held at
Intech, Winchester on November 9. Obviously we are disappointed not to get the
first prize which went to Compassion in World Farming. Matt Goss, formerly one half of hit 80s duo Bros and more recently to be seen in the “Hell’s Kitchen” TV series was due to be out on tour as a solo artist next month. This has now been put back to March/April next year as he has bronchitis. Firstly a sad farewell to BBC disc jockey John Peel who died of a heart attack while on holiday in Peru recently. A fascinating character in his own right, John did so much to open people’s minds to new music. He will be much missed. Fancy singing world music, funky songs, reggae, South African and improvised songs in glorious unaccompanied with a bunch of other people? Well you can, thanks to community musician Fiona Moore. She organises meetings of the No Commitments Choir on the 3rd Wednesday of every month in the Edmund Kell Hall in Bellevue Road, just off London Road in Southampton. The next one is on Wednesday November 17 starting at 7.15 pm and ending at 9.15pm. Sounds like an uplifting experience and the perfect antedote to stress. You can find out more from Fiona on 02380 220331 or her mobile 07795 812112 or see www.moorestories.co.uk . It costs £6, £4 concessions. Long Live Rock & Roll promotions have started regular monthly Stripped Sessions at the Mono Bar in Vernon Walk, Southampton. They showcase stripped down acoustic performances from a selection of the region’s most innovative bands. The next event at the Mono Bar is on Sunday November 14. Watch this space for the lineup or see the website www.longliverockandroll.com or ring Kevin McLoughlin on 02969 287092. Fans of The Handsome Family will be glad to hear that the American husband and wife duo will be back in the UK towards the end of the year. Brett and Rennie will be bringing their uniquely sinister brand of alt country to The Big Session with The Oyster Band when they play support on their tour. As well as gigs in London and Brighton there are concerts at The Anvil in Basingtoke on Wednesday December 1 and Salisbury City Hall on Thursday December 9. Looking for different News?
