PLAYING OUT LOUD!
FOOD & THINGSA message from Peter Ashton:
As a former restaurant reviewer for the Southern Daily Echo and a person who
enjoys eating out, I have prepared a list of cafes, bistros, wine bars, pubs and
restaurants in the South which I can recommend to you. Establishments which did
not come up to standard are not included! The criteria for eating out is the
same for everybody – fresh food, well prepared, in an ambient setting, value for
money and good service. All the following met these criteria. We revise this new
section as a simple list with telephone numbers for your convenience, but in
future we will be expanding it with regular restaurant reviews, and all things
food-related – speciality food suppliers, caterers, farm shops and farm markets,
food festivals, takeaways and sections on wine and beer. We will also be adding
to the list as we eat our way across the region.

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

We’re very happy to introduce a brand new restaurant to you which is completely
different to anywhere else in Southampton, and one which we shall be returning
to on a regular basis. Coco Rio is in a great position, tucked away off
busy Bedford Place, it’s very tastefully decorated, has a great atmosphere, and
the food is terrific.
The owners have created a restaurant decorated with rustic
African decor and sophisticated Latin influences which can accommodate up to 70
people With a reception gallery upstairs for pre and after dinner drinks, this
restaurant is the ideal location for small to medium parties.
We dropped in for lunch and decided to sample the Soul Food
Bowls, a very good way to try a wide range of dishes.
Choosing three dishes each for just £6 each, and swopping as we
went along, we were really impressed with the value, quality and service we
experienced. We tried avocado with roasted poblano chillies and pine kernels,
Malawi spiced chicken skewers with a macadamia satay, Kumara Koshery - a sweet
potato and coconut curry, Cajun spiced hand cut potato chips, African spicy hot
sauteed potatoes and Mozambique chicken curry. All the dishes were perfectly
cooked, full of tantalising flavours and nicely presented. There are 9 dishes to
choose from on the Soul Food Bowl menu so we
tasted most of them and were seriously impressed.
There is a wide range of other items on the lunchtime menu
including pasta dishes, omelettes, salads and brochettes, and we are definitely
going back to sample the evening menu which is even more varied. With starters
like Cape Calamari, Sauteed King Prawns and Char Grilled Crocodile Skewers, the
menu is enticing to say the least. And how about Cajun Blackened Fillet of
Salmon, Nigerian Vegetable Kebabs and Botswana Fillet Steak for a main course?
There are many more alternatives too - expect to pay between £3.50 and £6.50 for
a starter and between £9.50 and £14.95 for a main course.
I really can’t recommend Coco Rio highly enough, and this comes
from someone who has reviewed restaurants for the Southern Daily Echo and other
newspapers, and is not easily impressed!
