PLAYING OUT LOUD!
NEWS
Mint Burston, who died on November 17, 2007, was almost single-handedly
responsible for turning the Joiners Arms from a back-street Southampton pub into
one of the most important venues on the UK gig circuit, vital in the early
careers of Radiohead, Oasis, Muse, Coldplay and almost any important band of the
last thirty years. Mint's unerring instincts, his tolerant approach, his
unselfishness and his promoting skills are remembered and appreciated by all who
have visited or played at the Joiners. Please use the Myspace tribute page to
share your memories and appreciation of this unassuming but truly great man:

There’s a brand new 500 capacity music venue right in the heart of Winchester.
The Vault is situated on the University of Winchester campus on Sparkford Road,
and is open to both students and non-students for live music from Saturday
November 10 onwards. On that day the venue stages Transmission – A Tribute To
Joy Division to coincide with the recent release of “Control,” a film about the
late Ian Curtis of Joy Division.
Devoted to recreating the atmosphere of a live Joy Division gig, Transmission
emulate the sound of one of the most inventive, evocative and influential groups
of their era. Joy Division were formed in the late 1970s and dissolved in May
1980 after the suicide of lead singer Ian Curtis. The remaining members went on
to form New Order and have achieved much critical and commercial success. The
influence of Joy Division, however, was far reaching. They were considered the
pioneering band of the post-punk movement of the late 1970s and early 1980s.
More than 20 years on you can still relive the dark cavernous sound of Joy
Division through Transmission one of the leading UK tribute bands.
Tickets are available now from TICKETWEB or by calling 08700 600 100 (24hrs) and
save £2 by getting tickets in advance.

There’s also some bad news from Winchester – the popular Tower Arts Centre is
under threat. We reproduce below a statement from Hampshire County Council:
“Hampshire County Council would like to invite everyone interested in the
Tower Arts Centre to attend a public meeting to discuss its future on Thursday 1
November at 7pm at the Winchester Guildhall.
Hampshire County Council’s Executive Member for Recreation and Heritage,
Councillor Margaret Snaith and Winchester City’s Councillor for Culture,
Heritage and Sport, Patricia Stallard, will be leading the discussions which
will be facilitated by David Craig from MORI.
Caroline Felton, an independent arts consultant, who has been working on the
options available to the Tower Arts Centre, will be presenting these at the
meeting. Caroline’s option’s report will be available to view before the
meeting, on the Tower Arts website
www.towerarts.co.uk .
The meeting, which is scheduled to last two hours, will give people the
opportunity to put forward their views on the different options being presented.
Executive Member for Recreation and Heritage, Councillor Margaret Snaith said:
“I am looking forward to hearing the views of the public which will be noted and
considered in the consultation process. Those who can not make the meeting but
would like to make their views heard can email
arts.office@hants.gov.uk up until
7 November.”
In addition to the public consultation, Hampshire County Council will be
carrying out additional research with 500 residents across the Winchester
District. The interviews which will be carried by ICM research agency, will
select the participants at random and ask them to answer several questions about
the provision of arts in the Winchester area. The findings will form part of the
conclusions that will be presented to the Leader of Hampshire County Council,
Ken Thornber on his decision day on December 7 when he decides on the future of
the Tower.
On a more positive note for live music and entertainment, there is a recent
addition to venues in Verwood with a new community centre for the arts, The Hub.
Already open, The Hub is dedicated to many other things beside live music: adult
education, dance classes, yoga workshops, discos, craft workshops and much more.
Music events coming up in the near future include a concert by perennial folk
favourite Ralph McTell, Cockney rockers Chas & Dave and regular sessions with
the Verwood Jazz Club. There’s also a bistro and a cinema on site, all possibly
good reasons for moving to or near Verwood!
