PLAYING OUT LOUD!
FOOD & THINGSA message from Peter Ashton:
As a former restaurant reviewer for the Southern Daily Echo and a person who
enjoys eating out, I have prepared a list of cafes, bistros, wine bars, pubs and
restaurants in the South which I can recommend to you. Establishments which did
not come up to standard are not included! The criteria for eating out is the
same for everybody – fresh food, well prepared, in an ambient setting, value for
money and good service. All the following met these criteria. We revise this new
section as a simple list with telephone numbers for your convenience, but in
future we will be expanding it with regular restaurant reviews, and all things
food-related – speciality food suppliers, caterers, farm shops and farm markets,
food festivals, takeaways and sections on wine and beer. We will also be adding
to the list as we eat our way across the region.

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

We sampled this relatively new restaurant attached to Chilworth
Golf Club one Saturday lunchtime recently. It’s at the bottom of the hill on the
left on the road from Chilworth, just before you get to North Baddesley.
There is plenty of parking, it’s nice and quiet, spacious and attractively
decorated, with a very comfortable bar just inside the main entrance. My wife
and I took a table overlooking the driving range and had a look at the extensive
menu. We immediately decided that the lunchtime special was the best bet. A
3-course business lunch for £5.50 (£6.50 if you have a prawn or duck main
course) looked like great value. The deal was that you started off with a
special assorted platter, then chose a soup and a main meal from the a la carte
menu.
Our appetizer arrived pretty promptly, consisting of a couple of pancake rolls
each. several spare ribs, and two satay chicken skewers each, neatly arranged
around a pile of crispy seaweed and salad. A much more generous portion than the
average Chinese restaurant starter, and it was delicious. Our soups arrived at
just the right interval after the starter. I had chosen beef broth and my wife
opted for chicken and sweet corn soup. Again, perfectly prepared and presented.
By this time we were pretty full and glad for a pause before our main courses
arrived. King prawn chow mein for me and special house curry for my wife. I’m a
big fan of noodles, and this dish with a generous helping of prawns buried in a
steaming pile of noodles, bean shoots, onions and other vegetables, was just the
right-sized portion. My wife’s dish contained chicken, beef and other meats in a
not-too-hot curry sauce with perfectly cooked rice.
We were both impressed with the quality of our meals, the service and
surroundings, and agreed that, at the price, it was extremely good value. There
were a total of 187 dishes on the menu plus set meals, and they also serve
breakfast and morning coffee and a buffet menu. Fully licensed, with a takeaway
service, I think this restaurant is going to be pretty popular both with the
golfers and anybody who lives within range of it. I can’t recommend it highly
enough and urge you to make a visit and sample the culinary delights for
yourselves!
