OCTOBER 2002 FANS of one of the country’s most enduring pop groups, The Hollies, will be disappointed to learn that their current tour has been postponed until next year. Lead singer Carl Wayne has to have an urgent operation, so the band famous for 60s hits like “I’m Alive” and “Bus Stop” are temporarily off the road. Their October 30 gig at The Anvil in Basingstoke has been rescheduled for March 16 next year, by which time Carl will hopefully be fit. ALL THAT JAZZ comes to Southampton University campus this month with a Jazz Festival at Turner Sims Concert Hall and the resumption of Southampton Jazz Club's regular Tuesday sessions in the John Arlott Bar. The festival opens on Saturday October 5 with Tim Garland's Dean Street Underground Orchestra, a ten-strong outfit featuring special guest trumpeter Kenny Wheeler, playing the Turner Sims. Jazz fans have a choice the following Tuesday when there is a SJC Jam Session in the John Arlott Bar and the Steve Martland Band playing in the Turner Sims. Among the other Jazz Festival attractions are the Esbjorn Svensson Trio from Sweden, New York bass player Ben Allison and his Quintet, Juliet Roberts and her band with some soul-tinged jazz, and Belgian multi-instrumentalist Koen de Cauter heading Les Bohemes to play the music of Jacques Brel, Edith Piaf and others. SJC's October visitors also include Bill Pritchard with Jazz Inc, American saxist Lanny Morgan with the Andy Daniels Trio, plus the Kirk Lightsey Trio. Later highlights include powerful sax player Gilad Atzmon's Orient House Ensemble and the Stan Tracey Quintet, with the season concluding with the Southampton University Jazz Orchestra on December 10. For further details on SJC presentations ring Andy Iles on 02380 491954; the Turner Sims Box Office is on 02380 595151. GORDON HASKELL'S eagerly awaited new album "Shadows On The Wall" is out on October 14. A sneak preview reveals a CD well up to the standard set by "Harry's Bar" which has sold over 180,000 copies to date. Several songs, notably the title track would make surefire hit singles. Gordon's tour kicks off in November and includes a gig at The Brook in Southampton on Friday the 29th. Watch our "Interview" section for an in-depth conversation with Gordon in the near future. A BOHEMIAN Romany will be bringing her considerable musical talents to two Hampshire venues during October. Vera Bila, "the Ella Fitzgerald of Gypsy music" brings her band Kale to the Ashcroft Arts Centre in Fareham on Wednesday October 16, and Newport's Quay Arts Centre over on the Isle of Wight the following evening. Singer Vera was born in Rokycany in Bohemia in the Czech Republic in 1954 and began her singing career at family celebrations, weddings and parties with the dulcimer music of her father, Karol Gina. She went on to become an international performer with her band Kale after their album "Rom Pop" was released in 1995. Their sound based on acoustic guitars supplemented by fiddle or percussion with the vocals of the four male members of the band topped by Vera's own passionate vocal tones led to tours of Europe and Canada. ONE of the delights in anticipating an Eliza Carthy gig is wondering what colour her hair will be this time. It was blue at the last sighting but it could be any shade of the rainbow by the time the unique folk singer and violinist reaches the Talking Heads in Southampton for a gig on Friday October 11. Now in her tenth year as a professional, the talented daughter of folk legends Martin Carthy and Norma Waterson, Eliza has continued in her parents' footsteps. She has been described in the folk music press as "a marvellous vocalist who has drawn equally from the craft and the idiosyncrasies of both her parents' distinctive styles." TALKING HEADS have also announced regular jazz sessions on Tuesday night. The Solent City Jazzmen will be belting out some goodtime New Orleans jazz at the Southampton venue every week from October 1, and admission is free! LOOK OUT for the bizarrely named Australian blues singer and guitarist Skinnybark McDowell at venues in the south over the next few months. The husky voiced Aussie, a good friend of compatriots Derrin Nauendorf and Dave Downing, is currently based in Southampton and has already made two successful appearances at local venues. The entertainer makes all his own instruments (24 at the last count - most still back home in Australia) including a unique square model made out of a fence panel. Stringybark will be at the Platform Tavern on Thursday October 3. Looking for old music News? Click here for our NEW archive |
