Welcome to
PLAYING OUT LOUD!
Welcome to the October 2004 edition of Playing Out Loud,
POL for short. More comprehensive than ever with in-depth articles and interviews. As regular
visitors will know, and there are thousands of them now making
90,000+ hits per
month, our mission is to stimulate interest in live music and let you know
what’s on and where in Hampshire, Dorset and Wiltshire and parts of adjoining
counties. Jazz, pop, blues, folk, country, rock, soul and classical music are
all covered - if it’s live it’s here. But POL is not just a gigs listing site. Our Message Board has proved a popular innovation and can be used to recruit band members or announce last-minute gigs.
And it’s completely free. We will continue to review gigs, CDs, books and restaurants and provide you with the latest news. We also offer our services, for a small fee, to bands and performers
looking to improve their press, media or web content, and help them get more
gigs.
With over twenty years media experience, I personally know what is required to
get media coverage and how to present it, so
email me for more details. If you
like the look of this website my website manager can also help you set up your
own website or improve your existing one. Again, just
email for more
information.
POL October Editorial. At last! The Brook
in Southampton reopens on October 21 with The Hamsters getting their teeth into
some Hendrix and ZZ Top. You can read about all the improvements at the venue in
our Articles section where there is
also a piece on Nils Lofgren who appears there on the 23rd. The
Articles section also includes a
report on a special music project at Southampton YMCA, news of a Nazareth gig on
the Isle of Wight, an interview with 60s favourite John Leyton, and pieces on
African singer Sam Mangwana and jazz vocalist Gwyneth Herbert who are both
appearing in shows at The Anvil in Basingstoke during the month.
Our Listings section is more
comprehensive than ever. Just to take a sample from around the South: In
Southampton during
October there are three big musical productions at the Mayflower Theatre -
“Chicago”, “High Society” and “Fame”. Southampton Guildhall features Hoobastank
on the 26th and The Blues Brothers Show on the 28th. There’s plenty of activity
at smaller venues too with vibrant young band thisGIRL at The Joiners on the 9th
and a Global Battle of the Bands on the 21st, and the Platform Tavern providing
the best in blues and roots music with acts like Bill Sheffield, Sonny Black and
This Way Up.
Talking Heads have a cracking line-up this month with everything from
traditional jazz to funk, ska, reggae and Bhangra. Folk and jazz fans will
welcome the start of new seasons at the Fo’c’sle Club and Southampton Jazz Club
on the university campus.
Over in Portsmouth the
Guildhall has three top rock bands - Whitesnake on the 15th, the award-winning
Franz Ferdinand on the 23rd and The Rasmus on the 31st. The Wedgewood Rooms
welcome singer-songwriter Ed Harcourt on the 31st with songs from his brand new
album.
Way out west in Dorset
there’s some great stuff at Mr Kyps in
Poole including ace guitarist
and showman Larry Miller at Mr Kyps on the 2nd, where inspired singer-songwriter
Jackie Leven plays on the 14th and folk singer Isla St Clair of "Generation
Game" fame on the 25th.
Bournemouth BIC have a classy programme lined up with guests including The
Moody Blues, The Scissor Sisters, Katie Melua and Paul Carrack.
Elsewhere there’s a tantalising gig for rock fans at
Aldershot’s West End
Centre on Tuesday October 26th when Hayseed Dixie from Nashville play a
hillbilly tribute to AC/DC. The Anvil in
Basingstoke present
folk star Cara Dillon, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, the Solid Gold Rock & Roll
Show with Showaddywaddy and friends, Gene Pitney and The Kinks’ Ray Davies
during a packed month.
Lastly jazz fans may like to know that veteran Humphrey Lyttelton and his band
visit the Concorde Club in
Eastleigh on the 6th. The same venue also have a big charity night on the
26th with the New Gateway Jazz Band to raise money for the QEII Silver Jubilee
Activities Centre at Bursledon.
