PLAYING OUT LOUD!
NEWS
The Ragamuffin House Concert series have organised an evening
with Texan singer/songwriter Vince Bell at Roddington Forge in Allington Lane,
West End, Southampton on Wednesday October 27.
Vince Bell worked the Texas music scene during the late 70’s along side artists
like Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Nanci Griffith, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Lyle
Lovett. Then, in December 1982, on the way home from the studio, he was
broadsided by a drunk driver, changing his life forever. His massive injuries
included embedded glass, multiple lacerations to his liver, broken ribs, a
mangled right forearm, and a severe closed head injury which caused long-term
swelling about his brain. With doctors giving no hope for his survival, his
death was inadvertently reported in a local paper. But, Vince’s work wasn’t
done, and following a month long coma, he embarked on a decade-long journey to
reclaim his identity, music, and life.
Finally, in 1994, Vince released his comeback CD, “Phoenix” chronicling his long
ordeal and heralding the return of this treasure so fiercely fought and paid
for. His second CD, “Texas Plates” was released in 1999 and placed Vince Bell
right back where he should have been all along – comfortably ensconced in the
upper echelon of the songwriting guild.
Should be a great evening - doors open 7.30pm with the show starting half an
hour or so later. See
www.ragamuffin.fsbusiness.co.uk for more information. Vince is also at
Lugley’s in Newport, Isle of Wight on Sunday October 24 and The RMA Tavern in
Portsmouth on Tuesday October 26.
The
Tubes, the outrageous San Francisco-based theatrical rock band, best known for
their outlandish, no-holds-barred rock concerts and the satirical American
parody anthems 'White Punks On Dope', 'Mondo Bondage' and 'What Do You Want From
Life', have just announced the December 2004 UK Tour Dates for their forthcoming
concerts - 'The Tubes Wild West Tour'.
The tour will include the original members of the Tubes - Fee Waybill (lead
vocals), Prairie Prince (drums), Roger Steen (guitar), and Rick Anderson (bass),
plus new members Gary Cambra (keyboards) and David Medd (synths). The tour is a
warm-up to the band's forthcoming studio album which will be released in 2005.
Lead vocalist and front man, Fee Waybill says, "The Wild West concept of the
show is full of unexpected surprises and fun, and UK audiences will be in for a
treat. "The show kicks off with an overture of Spaghetti western movie themes
hosted by MC Wild Bill Fee," adds Waybill. "Other onstage personas will include
a Mexican bandito/Mariachi singer, a Mad Cow Auctioneer/Chainsaw Butcher, and a
Snake Oil Salesman called Diamond Dick." Waybill is also planning to bring back
his popular stage personas, Mondo Bondage Gimp, and the infamous drug induced
British rock star Quay Lewd.
As the quintessential satirists of American culture, the Tubes were the first to
combine theatrical rock extravaganzas with great musicianship. Despite being
repeatedly banned for their uncensored live concerts, during November 1977 the
Tubes sold out six nights at the Odeon Hammersmith, and recorded the live album
'What Do You Want From Live', which was subsequently released the following
year.
Unfortunately The Tubes will not be coming anywhere near the South Coast but
fans can travel to the following venues:

Congratulations to Bryn and Richard at The Brook in Southampton
which reopens on Thursday October 21. The city’s finest music venue has been
extended and improved and The Hamsters will be there on the 21st to get a new
era off to a rocking start. Also lined up are Nils Lofgren, Southside Johnny,
Beverley Craven, Tony Hadley, Roy Wood, Go West, The Manfreds and a host of
other top music acts. Have a look at
www.the-brook.co.uk
for the full programme up to Christmas.
It’s a sad farewell incidentally to two people connected with
The Brook and the music scene in general - Carl Wayne and Irene Johnson who both
died recently. Carl played there with The SAS Band several years ago and was
also in Southampton with The Hollies at the Mayflower earlier this year. I had
the pleasure of interviewing him once and he was a really friendly, unspoilt guy
who will be much missed. Irene Johnson was Wilko Johnson’s wife and also his
business manager, handling all his bookings. I know Bryn and Richard at The
Brook will join me in sending our condolences to Wilko.
Southampton YMCA is pioneering a new initiative in the city to
engage with young people in conjunction with YMCA England and Youth Achievement
Awards, part of a project going on all over the country. Music is the subject
chosen for Southampton’s Exclude Me In Project with workshops based on music
skills including guitar, drums and keyboards plus vocal and production
techniques which will be held at the YMCA. They will be backed up by coverage of
essential life and enterprise skills such as vision, team, communication,
administration and responsibility. The project has already started with members
of the YMCA and it is hoped to extend it into the local community at a later
date. The full story can be seen in our Articles section.
Fans of The Handsome Family will be glad to hear that the
American husband and wife duo will be back in the UK towards the end of the
year. Brett and Rennie will be bringing their uniquely sinister brand of alt
country to The Big Session with The Oyster Band when they play support on their
tour. As well as gigs in London and Brighton there are concerts at The Anvil in
Basingtoke on Wednesday December 1 and Salisbury City Gall on Thursday December
9.
Following on from the successful Vocal Harmonies Workshop at
Thornden Hall, Chandlers Ford in April this year with Jacqueline Dankworth,
Liane Carroll and Sara Colman, who sing together as The Passion, the second
community workshop in the series is planned for Sunday October 17.
The workshop presented by Angela Jackson features The Swedish/Italian Method,
which will be delivered by maestro David Jones, from New York and Ann De Renais,
Belgian Coloratura soprano, both teachers of the Swedish/Italian method of
singing. The workshop is suitable for anybody over the age of 16, beginners or
advanced singers, and teachers who wish to learn new methods, and up-date
present skills, to pass on to their students.
David is a well-known teacher of vocal technique throughout the USA and Europe,
now teaching in Amsterdam, Paris, London, Berlin and Brussels. His singers have
performed at venues such as the Metropolitan Opera and New York City Opera,
through to the Zurich Opera, Berlin Staatsoper, Vienna Staatsoper and Carnegie
Hall.
Ann De Renais studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the Royal
Conservatoires of Brussels and Ghent, Belgium and is a former member of The
Swingle Singers. Ann teaches in London and performs regularly with London
Voices. She has recorded for TV, radio, and feature films and can be heard in
The Return of the King (Lord of the Rings 3) and Harry Potter.
More details about the workshop, which will be at Thornden Hall, Chandlers Ford,
on Sunday October 17 from 11am - 4pm can be obtained from Angela Jackson on:
02380 25 3428 or at
www.angelajacksonsworkshops.co.uk . The last workshop sold out, so early
booking is advisable.
Following the workshop, there will be a concert at Thornden Hall at 8.00pm
featuring Ann De Renais and Ensemble Andromeda, whose music ranges from the
Baroque, French romantic, jazz, cabaret, through to operatic and contemporary
repertoire. Details and tickets are available from Angela Jackson: 023 8025 3428
or Thornden Hall: 023 8026 5852 - £9/£7 to include a drink.
