PLAYING OUT LOUD!
NEWS
Our good friend Gordon Haskell has a very good DVD called “The
Road to Harry’s Bar” coming out at the end of October that features an
incredible bunch of musicians. The DVD features a concert lasting 100 minutes
and there is also a 35 minute interview with Gordon which he says you will
either love or hate!
In January 2006, a new single by Gordon is scheduled to be released at the same
time as the book ‘’The Road to Harry’s Bar’’. Then around March Gordon is to
release another single along with the new album, tentatively called
‘’Wounded Tigers’’. Gordon is also gigging regularly at the 606 Jazz Club in
Chelsea with Paul Young on saxophone if you are suffering live-Haskell
deprevation.
Our tip for the top, Laura Vane, an “incendiary blonde” with a
big soul voice, follows up her recent successful support slot on the Carleen
Anderson gig at The Brook in Southampton with another appearance at the venue
this month.
This time she will be one of the artists featured in the “Revive” evening on
Saturday October 8, which presents a sizzling combination of live music and DJs.
Don’t miss her and a great night generally!

Seth Lakeman, booked to kick off his autumn tour at
Southampton’s Talking Heads on Wednesday, October 5 has been nominated for
Britain’s most prestigious music award – the Mercury Music Prize. One of the
fastest rising stars in the folk roots world, the dynamic 28year old Devon
musician and songwriter will go head to head with 11 other contenders including
mainstream music giants Coldplay for the £20,000 prize awarded to the best
British album of the year.
Lakeman’s surprise nomination is for his second album, "Kitty Jay", a brooding
masterpiece of his own and traditional compositions, all based on myths and
legends of his native Dartmoor. Recorded for just £300 in the kitchen of his
Devon cottage, it features extraordinary fiddle playing from Lakeman and was
voted Time Out magazine’s No 1 Folk/Roots album of 2004. Says Lakeman: "I spent
my last £177 on the entry fee for this award but I didn’t really think I had a
chance in hell of being chosen as one of the best 12 albums out of the thousands
produced each year."
