PLAYING OUT LOUD!
NEWS
MARVA WHITNEY & OSAKA MONAURAIL – Soul Cellar. Thursday 30th
October
American Soul royalty unites with one of the hottest funk acts in the world for
a mouth watering event at Southampton’s Soul Cellar next Thursday night!
Marva Whitney made her name singing with James Brown in the 1960s and she is
fondly remembered as one of the rawest and most powerful divas of her
generation. “Marvellous Marva” made such an impact during her time in The James
Brown Revue that the Godfather Of Soul himself went as far as to proclaim her as
“Soulsister #1” and she was seen by many as Brown’s protégé. Her much sampled
recordings now fetch mind boggling sums on the collectors market and she is
widely regarded as the funkiest of all of Brown’s singers.
Little has been seen or heard of Marva since her last LP release in 1970, “Live
& Lowdown At The Apollo”. That is until now! Last year, having toured with DJ
Pari’s Soulpower Organization, she recorded her first album in nearly 40 years
entitled “I Am What I Am”. Japanese funk orchestra Osaka Monaurail recorded the
set with Marva and now the two acts are touring all over Europe for what
promises to be an extraordinary evening.
Next Thursday’s date at Soul Cellar is one of only two UK dates and tickets are
selling fast. This really is one not to be missed. Tickets are priced at £14 and
available from the Soul Cellar Box Office. The telephone number is 023 8063
2601. Enquiries and bookings can also be made by e-mailing
info@soulcellar.com or visiting
the website address which is

We were sad to hear of the death of Alan Briars last December.
Alan was co-founder of the Trowbridge Village Pump Festival and was also a
musician himself. The Arc Theatre in Trowbridge is staging A Tribute In Music To
Alan Briars on Saturday February 23. The lineup includes Alan’s former band
Stove Gallows, Mike Silver, Johnny Coppin, Keith Christmas and Fred Wedlock.
Please support the evening which is raising money for the Dorothy House Hospice.
Tickets are £10 through 0845 299 0476.
Mint Burston, who died on November 17, 2007, was almost single-handedly
responsible for turning the Joiners Arms from a back-street Southampton pub into
one of the most important venues on the UK gig circuit, vital in the early
careers of Radiohead, Oasis, Muse, Coldplay and almost any important band of the
last thirty years. Mint's unerring instincts, his tolerant approach, his
unselfishness and his promoting skills are remembered and appreciated by all who
have visited or played at the Joiners. Please use the Myspace tribute page to
share your memories and appreciation of this unassuming but truly great man:
