LIVE MUSIC at the Railway Inn in Winchester will go on hold for a couple of weeks while the band room is being refurbished. The room will be closed for eleven days commencing Monday September 9, 2002.
The capacity of the room is being increased as part of the Railway's ongoing dedication to showcasing upcoming bands and artists and cementing the pub's reputation as Winchester's leading live music venue.
The last gig before the closure is a special showcase night on Saturday September 7 featuring BlueJay Way, Opus and Kaolin. The re-opening evening on Friday September 20 features drum 'n bass from Organised Chaos. An early highlight in the refurbished venue will be the visit of American singer/songwriter Mia Sheard on Tuesday September 24. The closure will not affect the main bar where the Railway will be open as usual, and liveattherailway.co.uk will also remain operational. For further information contact the Railway on 01962 867795.

JOHN MAYALL and his Bluesbreakers have been entertaining blues lovers in the south for over four decades, since their early visits to the old Concorde Club in Burgess Road, Southampton. John, who now lives in Los Angeles, is back on the road next month with a new album "Stories" (see review) to promote. On a double header with Peter Green's Splinter Group, the tour takes in several venues in the south: Bournemouth Pavilion on October 30, Salisbury City Hall on November 27, Basingstoke Anvil on November 29 and Portsmouth Guildhall on December 1.

DERRIN NAUENDORF, the sensational young Australian roots/blues guitarist and singer is back in action following the recent tragic death of his sister. Derrin flew home to be with his family the day after a stunning appearance at the Larmer Tree Festival with drummer David Downing.
You can welcome him back at the Platform Tavern in Southampton on Wednesday August 14, and the gig with a full band at The Brook has been rearranged for Wednesday September 25.

TALKING HEADS is very much back in business now that new owners Simon and Moira are in charge. Anyone who hasn't been to the friendly Portswood Road venue for some time will notice a few changes, none of which has done anything to spoil the atmosphere of a unique location. Quite the opposite, there has been some tasteful redecoration, a new layout is far more practical, and even the notorious toilets have had a brush-up. The musical policy remains the same - "if it's good, we'll book it." Coming up soon Bates Motel, manic Cornish psycho-celts, The Paperboys, a folky outfit from Canada, and the luxurious soul sound of Hershey & The 12 Bars. For more info ring 02380 678446 or check out www.thetalkingheads.net
