PLAYING OUT LOUD!
NEWS
Just a reminder that one of the South’s rising stars, Laura
Vane, will be playing a gig at the Orange Rooms off Carlton Place in Southampton
on Sunday September 18. Laura and her band played a knockout set as support to
Carleen
Anderson at The Brook last week which is covered in our Reviews section. If you
like your music sweet, soulful and funky, you’ll love Laura and her band.
Southampton Jazz Club resume their regular sessions at the John
Arlott Bar on the Southampton University campus on Tuesday September 20. But
sadly, due to financial considerations, they will be monthly rather than weekly
in future.
They kick off with a Jam Session on the 20th, with top jazz musicians appearing
from October onwards. So if you’re a budding jazz musician who would like the
experience of playing with a semi-pro rhythm section comprising three
of Southampton's top players - the Chris Paradine trio - then go along. Jazz
singers are welcome as are rhythm section players (piano, bass, drums, guitar).
There's a charge of £2 on the door for players and £3 for anyone who would like
just like to listen

Seth Lakeman, booked to kick off his autumn tour at
Southampton’s Talking Heads on Wednesday, October 5 has been nominated for
Britain’s most prestigious music award – the Mercury Music Prize. One of the
fastest rising stars in the folk roots world, the dynamic 28year old Devon
musician and songwriter will go head to head with 11 other contenders including
mainstream music giants Coldplay for the £20,000 prize awarded to the best
British album of the year.
Lakeman’s surprise nomination is for his second album, "Kitty Jay", a brooding
masterpiece of his own and traditional compositions, all based on myths and
legends of his native Dartmoor. Recorded for just £300 in the kitchen of his
Devon cottage, it features extraordinary fiddle playing from Lakeman and was
voted Time Out magazine’s No 1 Folk/Roots album of 2004. Says Lakeman: "I spent
my last £177 on the entry fee for this award but I didn’t really think I had a
chance in hell of being chosen as one of the best 12 albums out of the thousands
produced each year."

Southampton soul singer Laura Vane will have to wait just a
little longer to introduce her new band at The Brook. Laura will be playing the
support slot at the Carleen Anderson gig which was to have taken place on August
31. Now
Carleen’s record company have insisted on rescheduling it to September 4 at the
same venue, apparently to tie in with the release of Carleen’s new album.
