PLAYING OUT LOUD!
NEWS
THE PETH – Soul Cellar – Sunday 28th September
It’s not often that cinema royalty visits Southampton. However this Sunday sees
one of those rare occasions. Welsh actor Rhys Ifans, the star of films such as
“Notting Hill”, has teamed up with Dafydd Ieuan of Welsh indie heroes Super
Furry Animals to form ten piece band The Peth and they will be playing songs
from their debut album “The Golden Mile”.
Ifans is no stranger to taking to the microphone as he was the original vocalist
in Super Furry Animals before leaving to concentrate on his acting career. The
Peth were formed in 2006 purely as an excuse for the band members to spend time
together in the studio.
“The Golden Mile” is a ten track album of a broad range of styles. From
psychedelic pop through to good old fashioned rock’n’roll, the band show great
imagination as well as having great fun. The songs tell of personal tales,
characters and locations in a mile long stretch between the studio where the
album was recorded and the Grangetown area of Cardiff. Recorded over a two year
period, the raw, edgy sound of the album will make for a pulsating live show
with the energetic Ifans sure to be great viewing as a front man. This really is
a unique opportunity not to be missed.
These are exciting times for The Soul Cellar. The bar is very much a unique
venue in Southampton and many more exciting acts are coming down South to play
live there in the near future.
Amongst those lined up is Marva Whitney, famously known as James Brown’s number
one soulsister, and she will be backed up by the fantastic Japanese funk
orchestra Osaka Monaurail on Thursday 30th October for what promises to be a
sensational evening. Also lined up are 1990s Acid Jazz stars The Brand New
Heavies on Saturday 25th October and Trio Valore, who feature Paul Weller’s long
serving drummer Steve White and Damon Michella, former bass player with Ocean
Colour Scene. They come to The Soul Cellar on Saturday 13th December.
Tickets are still available for The Peth show or any of the above shows from
www.livenation.co.uk and
Southampton Guildhall box office on 023 8063 2601. Support on the night comes
from local band Hijera.
We were sad to hear of the death of Alan Briars last December.
Alan was co-founder of the Trowbridge Village Pump Festival and was also a
musician himself. The Arc Theatre in Trowbridge is staging A Tribute In Music To
Alan Briars on Saturday February 23. The lineup includes Alan’s former band
Stove Gallows, Mike Silver, Johnny Coppin, Keith Christmas and Fred Wedlock.
Please support the evening which is raising money for the Dorothy House Hospice.
Tickets are £10 through 0845 299 0476.
Mint Burston, who died on November 17, 2007, was almost single-handedly
responsible for turning the Joiners Arms from a back-street Southampton pub into
one of the most important venues on the UK gig circuit, vital in the early
careers of Radiohead, Oasis, Muse, Coldplay and almost any important band of the
last thirty years. Mint's unerring instincts, his tolerant approach, his
unselfishness and his promoting skills are remembered and appreciated by all who
have visited or played at the Joiners. Please use the Myspace tribute page to
share your memories and appreciation of this unassuming but truly great man:
